Nevada Northern Railway Photography Workshop

My workshop series has been suspended until I can get my book Where Steam Moved Mountains published. I have a number of people interested in doing a workshop at Ely and hope that the book will generate additional interest. The museum has now finally started a fall photo shoot weekend so that will give us something to tie the workshop to, hopefully in 2008. This year the fall event is in late September.

2008 WORKSHOP is projected for September, dates to be announced. The workshop itself will start on a Tuesday evening, with a show and tell, get acquainted session. I will present some of my work done at the museum. Wednesday and Thursday, we will be shooting at the museum all day, plus evening critique sessions. We will do an additional morning presentation on Wednesday, then take a tour of the yards, shops and offices. After lunch, I will do a demonstration photograph setup. For the balance of the afternoon and next day students will be free to do their own images and I will be available to assist. After the shops close about 5:00 pm and we will retire to our rooms, followed by dinner out and then some detailed portfolio reviews.

The museum is scheduled to begin work late this year on the restoration of #81, a Baldwin 2-8-0 built in 1917. The work will likely take several years and this will provide us with some unique photo opportunities photographing a partially disassembled steam locomotive.

Steam will be brought up on the locomotives on Friday and do some switching and other things in the yards. In the afternoon students will be free to continue work in the yards and shops. About mid-afternoon, I will begin setting up my flash equipment for the night photo session. We will do both static and synchronized action flash photographs. This event will be the beginning of the regular fall photo shoot.

On Saturday, we will begin early, the light can be exceptional in the early morning as the locomotive comes out of the engine house. We will meet there for coffee and donuts at 7:00 the locomotive will come out about 7:30. Our photo train is due out at 9:00 and we will do many photo stops, with runbys. We will come back for lunch which will be served at the depot. After an afternoon of shooting there will be a barbeque ant the depot. Sunday will be a repeat of Saturday with the trains taking different routes. Sunday will be dinner on your own.

While the Tuesday - Friday workshop will emphasize large format view cameras and it is practical to shoot the photo trains with a view camera, you may find the photo trains best shot with a hand camera, either of a smaller format or a larger format Speed Graphic. I will be using my Super Graphic, but I have several 4x5 Speed/Crown Graphics which I will make available to students. This will be a great chance to try out one of these classic cameras.

I have not yet prepared a new PDF flier for the workshop, but am keeping the 2004 flier up for reference. The schedule is subject to change, but the price has been set at $395 for the workshop and $38 0 for the Fall Photo Shoot . For information about the museum see the link below.
