Sierra Tunnel - The above photograph is one of my earliest large format images, having been made in 1973. It was made at a place called Andover on the Southern Pacific, below the tree outside the tunnel lies Donner Lake. Yes a train did come while I was setting up the camera. The railroad is double track here with left hand running. I walked into the tunnel, which is fairly long, from the other end, relying on hearing any approaching train laboring up grade from behind me and this worked and I was able to safely get out of the tunnel. The sky was full of smoke from forest fires and this is why the distant peak is so faint.
